Facial Symmetry Glossary

Understand the technical terms used in facial analysis and biological research.

Bilateral Symmetry
The property of being divisible into symmetrical halves on either side of a unique plane. In humans, this plane is the sagittal plane.
Directional Asymmetry
A consistent bias where one side of a population significantly differs from the other (e.g., most people's hearts being on the left side).
Fluctuating Asymmetry
Small, random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry caused by environmental or genetic stress during development.
Golden Ratio (Phi)
A mathematical ratio (approximately 1.618) often used in art and aesthetics to define ideal proportions in the human face.
Mere-Exposure Effect
The psychological phenomenon where people develop a preference for things merely because they are familiar with them—often why we prefer our mirrored reflection.
Sagittal Plane
The longitudinal plane that divides the body into right and left sections.
