Facial Symmetry Glossary
Understand the technical terms used in facial analysis and biological research.
- Bilateral Symmetry
- The property of being divisible into symmetrical halves on either side of a unique plane. In humans, this plane is the sagittal plane.
- Directional Asymmetry
- A consistent bias where one side of a population significantly differs from the other (e.g., most people's hearts being on the left side).
- Fluctuating Asymmetry
- Small, random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry caused by environmental or genetic stress during development.
- Golden Ratio (Phi)
- A mathematical ratio (approximately 1.618) often used in art and aesthetics to define ideal proportions in the human face.
- Mere-Exposure Effect
- The psychological phenomenon where people develop a preference for things merely because they are familiar with them—often why we prefer our mirrored reflection.
- Sagittal Plane
- The longitudinal plane that divides the body into right and left sections.
